The Ocean Is Not a Dustbin: Why Saving Life Below Water Means Saving Ourselves

When we think about environmental problems, we often picture melting glaciers, polluted cities or disappearing forests. The ocean, despite covering more than 70 per cent of our planet, is often forgotten. Beneath its surface exists a world of extraordinary biodiversity that supports human life in ways we rarely notice.

This is why Sustainable Development Goal 14, “Life Below Water,” is so important. Adopted by the United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda, SDG 14 aims to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources. The ocean provides food and livelihoods to more than three billion people and plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s climate.

Yet, the health of our oceans is deteriorating.

A Crisis Beneath the Waves

Marine ecosystems are facing multiple threats at the same time. Plastic pollution, untreated wastewater, chemical waste, overfishing, habitat destruction and climate change are placing enormous pressure on marine life.

Plastic is perhaps one of the most visible examples. A bottle or food wrapper thrown on a street may eventually enter a drainage system, travel through rivers and reach the sea. Once there, it can harm marine animals through ingestion or entanglement and eventually break down into smaller particles.

But the problem goes far beyond plastic.

Overfishing is also threatening the balance of marine ecosystems. According to the latest UN data, 35.5 per cent of global marine fish stocks were classified as overfished in 2021. This affects not only marine biodiversity but also the millions of people whose food and livelihoods depend on fisheries.

Climate Change Is Also an Ocean Problem

Climate change is often discussed in terms of rising temperatures on land, but the ocean is experiencing its own transformation.

The ocean absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As carbon dioxide levels rise, seawater becomes more acidic. The average surface ocean pH fell from approximately 8.1 in 1985 to 8.04 in 2023. Increasing acidification can make it more difficult for organisms such as corals and shell-forming species to build and maintain their structures.

Ocean temperatures are also rising. In 2024, global ocean heat content reached its highest level in the 65-year observational record. This warming contributed to the fourth global coral bleaching event, which was confirmed in 2024 and continued into 2025.

Coral reefs are particularly important because they provide shelter and breeding grounds for countless marine species. When reefs decline, an entire ecosystem can suffer.

Why India Cannot Ignore the Problem

For India, protecting the ocean is not simply an environmental responsibility—it is an economic and social necessity.

India has a vast coastline and millions of people depend directly or indirectly on fisheries, coastal tourism and other marine activities. Our relationship with the ocean also extends to food security, transportation and livelihoods.

India’s marine and coastal ecosystems include coral reefs, mangroves, estuaries, seagrass ecosystems and other habitats that support biodiversity. The country’s official Voluntary National Review recognises pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction, climate change and ocean acidification among the major challenges to marine ecosystems.

Therefore, protecting India’s oceans cannot be limited to occasional beach-cleaning drives. Such activities are useful, but the solution needs to be much larger.

From Awareness to Action

The responsibility for protecting marine life cannot rest solely with governments.

As individuals, we can reduce unnecessary single-use plastic, avoid littering, segregate waste, dispose of waste responsibly and make environmentally conscious consumption choices. Educational institutions can turn environmental education into practical activities by organising awareness campaigns, clean-up drives and projects focused on marine conservation.

Businesses must also reconsider how their products are manufactured, packaged and disposed of. Governments need effective waste-management systems, sustainable fishing regulations, stronger protection for marine habitats and better enforcement of environmental laws.

There is reason for hope. In June 2025, more than 170 countries adopted a declaration at the United Nations Ocean Conference calling for urgent action on marine conservation, pollution, sustainable use of the ocean and protection of vulnerable coastal communities.

The challenge now is to turn commitments into action.

The Ocean Does Not Need Us—But We Need the Ocean

Perhaps the most important message of SDG 14 is that protecting marine life is not about saving something distant from us.

It is about protecting ourselves.

A polluted coastline can affect tourism. Declining fish populations can affect food security and fishermen’s livelihoods. Damaged coral reefs and mangroves can weaken natural protection against coastal hazards. Changes in the ocean can also influence the climate system on which every society depends.

The ocean has supported human civilisation for centuries. It has provided food, connected communities and helped regulate our planet. Yet we have treated it as if its resources were unlimited and its capacity to absorb our waste had no boundary.

That mindset has to change.

“Life Below Water” should not remain merely a phrase in a list of 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It should become a shared responsibility.

The choices we make on land eventually reach the water. The plastic we throw away, the energy we consume and the resources we demand are all connected to the health of our oceans.

We still have an opportunity to change the direction in which we are heading. But protecting the ocean cannot be a responsibility for future generations alone.

If we want a healthy planet above the water, we must first learn to protect the life below it.
